Capital One
INTERNSHIP - 2023

CONTEXT
Governing data at Capital One
To protect private and sensitive data at Capital One, contributors must govern, remediate, and manage their data in order to ensure compliancy with data security policies. The Data Governance Center centralizes sensitive data governance tasks, is essential to ensure compliance and operational efficiency at Capital One.

DESIGN ITERATIONS
The hidden costs of a poor onboarding experience
A heap of risks and inefficiencies.
With a new and in-demand product such as The Data Governance Center, there is critical demand for effective onboarding.
However, the current lack of onboarding poses significant frustrations. Associates currently are forced to navigate a range of disjointed tools and platforms including email, Slack, and adhoc meetings to onboard driving multiple inefficiencies, and manual effort, barrier to entry.
Manual tracking — manually tracking data governance related tasks poses major risks of data lose in translation
Manual onboarding — using multiple platforms to onboard causes confusion and deters user adoption
Disjointed tools — lack of single source of truth drives inefficiencies in onboarding process

DESIGN QUESTION
How can we design an onboarding solution that increases user adoption rates, eliminates efficiencies, and scales to support many Lines of Business?
SOLUTION
A Data Governance Center Onboarding Tool
The Data Governance Center onboarding site is an end-to-end onboarding platform that consolidates resources, guides users through their workflows, and establishes a scalable framework for onboarding across lines of businesses into a single source of truth.
The site is designed to reduce of the number of inefficiencies with onboarding, accelerate adoption, and improve data lineage.
Reduce bottlenecks and manual tasks in onboarding

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
Mapping out the details
Turning complex information into clear structures.
To map this end-to-end solution I created an information architecture diagram in order to visualize any gaps, disjointed experiences, and user needs. To gather all the necessary information I proactively met with multiple stakeholders including product managers, tech leads, and UX researchers frequently. After I developed an information hierarchy by organizing and prioritizing the data. Throughout the design process, I mapped out several flows and refined them through multiple iterations to ensure alignment on project and user goals. (visualize process of talking w partners)

DESIGN ITERATIONS
Translating user needs into high fidelity designs
Sketching out the ideas
After prioritization and organizing the information, I sketched several low fidelity wireframes in order to visualize the interaction flow, elements, and content on each screen. Creating several versions of lo-fidelity wire frames allowed me to ideate rapidly and effectively. The sketches allowed me to guide discussions in how to best translate user needs into design solutions with partners to elicit greater feedback for a final user centered solution.

5 design reviews
8 iterations
I facilitated a constant stream of communication between tech, product, and content partners to receive ongoing feedback that informed my design decisions. Through numerous design critiques and feedback sessions, I created iterations of the design that improved upon its information hierarchy, interactions, and visual design.

USER RESEARCH
Conducting User Interviews
USER INSIGHTS
What does a use case mean in simple terms?
What is an example of a case?
What features are available now versus are on the roadmap?
How do I know if it’s worth my time to migrate?
How many steps will it take me to onboard?
Would be nice to have a visual demo to walk me through the steps.
AFFINITY MAPPING & ANALYSIS
After building out the product vision, I set up and constructed usability testing sessions to test and validate the onboarding website. In order to conduct the testing, I wrote a research plan and script to evaluate the usability, feasibility, and impact of the website.
I conducted 5 heuristic evaluation sessions with Product Managers and Tech Leads across teams to elicit diverse feedback.

SOLUTION
Delivering the solution that users need
The testing sessions helped to elicit feedback centered around adding and reorganizing critical information, consistency in language, and visual design.
CLEAR LANGUAGE
Having more intuitive language and clear context to simplify complex processes.
WORKFLOW INTEGRATION
Providing clarity on how the Data Governance Center can help users’ personal workflow.
VISUAL AIDS
Leveraging visuals aids and real-time examples helps users connect their work to practical applications of the tool.
Project Takeaways
Turning past roadblocks into future foresight.
Ambiguity can be a strength
Navigating an unclear problem space taught me to proactively seek collaboration and create tangible action items, helping me drive progress despite uncertainty.
Iterating quickly and often
By iterating often based on stakeholder and user feedback I ensured the product stayed close to both user and business needs.
Leveraging collaboration for clarity
To become fluent in the product, I sought partners expertise which enabled me to grasp the product’s complexity and design a more comprehensive solution.
Owning the process to deliver impactful solutions
Taking ownership to push a design solution through the double diamond process allowed me ideate, build, and validate an end-to-end solution.
